Best Chocolate Sheet Cake on National Chocolate Cake Day
Who knew today is National Chocolate Cake Day? So I say let’s go have a slice, or two!
What’s your favorite cake flavor? Mine is chocolate, hands down. But not just any chocolate. I love chocolate sheet cake. Every birthday my mom would make me a chocolate sheet cake with a dash of her secret ingredient, cinnamon.
And every year I had my fork ready to eat it all!
I thought I’d share with you my favorite chocolate cake recipe. You’ll want to make this for everyones birthday I promise, or maybe try it this weekend. Whatever you do have your fork ready!
Chocolate Sheet Cake
For the cake:
2c flour 1c boiling water
2c sugar 1/2 c buttermilk
1/4 tsp salt 2 whole beaten eggs
4TBSP (heaping) cocoa 1tsp baking soda
dash of cinnamon 1tsp vanilla
2 sticks butter
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. In saucepan melt butter. Add coca, stir together. Add boiling water, allow mixture to boil for 30 seconds then turn heat off. Pour over flour mixture and stir lightly to cool. In a measuring cup, pour the buttermilk and add beaten eggs, baking soda, and vanilla. Stir buttermilk mixture into the butter/chocolate mixture. Pour into 11×13 sheet cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. While cake is baking, make the icing.
For the frosting:
1/2 c chopped pecans
1-3/4 stick butter
4TBSP (heaping) coca
6TBSP milk
1 tsp vanilla
1lb (less 1/2 cup) powdered sugar
Chop pecans finely. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add coca, stir to combine. Then turn off heat. Add the milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar. Stir together. Add the pecans, stir together, and pour over warm cake.
Enjoy and happy National Chocolate Cake Day!
